3 Common Cedar Fence Problems:
We love a good Cedar Fence here at Premium Fence Company, they are usually beautiful but like any product, they have some pros and cons. We wanted to take this opportunity to go over 3 common problems a strata will run into if they choose to install a cedar fence on their property.
We have already written a blog that pertains to maintaining your Cedar Fence called “ 3 Ways Strata’s Can Maintain their Cedar Fence” in that post we share three tips that your strata can use to ensure your cedar fence lasts as long as possible.
We wanted this article to serve as an educational piece. Cedar is a great choice if you’re looking for a fence but we wanted you to know exactly what you’re getting into with it and that includes the problems.
Let’s get started, here are 3 common cedar fence problems.
- Warping or rotten boards.
Cedar fences are subject to warping, damage. You’ll need to inspect your wood fence annually to ensure that rotten boards are replaced, loose nails are hammered in, and screws are tightened. Your strata is going to want to have someone walk around your fence once a year to check for any warped, rotten, or damaged boards. If you don’t get on top of the problem in a timely manner it can continue to get worse over time.
A Cedar fence will typically need to be replaced once every 25 years. Premium Fence specializes in full Strata fence replacements. We’ve got amazing products and 35 years of experience doing exactly this. We also wanted to say that if the entire fence is not needing replacement and you find that you only need a few boards replaced then Jason from 5 Star Fence would probably be your best bet for smaller repairs of that nature. Jason’s commitment to excellence is second to none.
- Wobbly posts.
You’ll also need to be on the lookout for leaning and wobbly posts. Wood Fence posts naturally weaken and start to rot over time. This happens regardless of whether or not they are installed directly in the soil or encased in a concrete footing. If your posts break it will cause your fence to start to lean over. You may not need to replace your fence if you only have a few rotting posts. You can hire someone like Jason from 5 Star Fence to replace those posts or stabilize them with splints or braces. Be sure to inspect your fence for wobbly posts once a year as the situation can continue to get worse if not addressed in a timely manner.
- Mold and peeling paint.
A cedar fence typically needs to be cleaned once every 3-5 years to remove any moss, mold, mildew, dirt, peeling paint, and graying. The fence will also need to be resealed or painted after it has been cleaned. As we mentioned in our blog titled “ 3 Ways Strata’s Can Maintain their Cedar Fence” Mold and mildew spots should be removed as soon as possible as they will eat away at the Cedar if left untreated. Creating the cleaning solution required to complete this job is very simple; you’ll simply need to mix in 4 oz of oxygen bleach and a gallon of hot water into a bucket and scrub the mold and mildew away with a scrub brush. Once you’ve completed this, be sure to rinse the fence with plain water. You can also reach out to 5 Star Fence for this project. They offer cleaning and staining services.
If your strata are thinking about replacing their cedar fence then we strongly encourage you to examine your options. Cedar is a great option aesthetically speaking and it can last 25 years if maintained properly.
There are options your Strata can consider if they are looking to drastically lower the maintenance bill or eliminate it entirely!
The only maintenance your vinyl fence will require is a cleaning a couple of times a year. Vinyl fencing is also five times stronger than wood and retains its color wonderfully. A vinyl fence also doesn’t decompose or absorb moisture. If your strata are looking for an aesthetically pleasing maintenance-free alternative to cedar fencing then vinyl is probably going to be your best bet. It may cost more upfront but when you consider the amount of money you’ll be saving over the years in maintenance it pays for itself very quickly. We’d also like you to consider the fact that this would be one less thing counsel would need to monitor or talk about over the coming years. Install a vinyl fence once and never worry about the job again. Don’t hesitate to contact us if your strata are interested in a full fence replacement.
If your strata is interested in the most aesthetically pleasing option and don’t mind paying a premium for the ultimate fence that will last a lifetime then we implore you to check out our SLEEKFENCE aluminum fence product.
An aluminum privacy fence and aluminum screen fence product will require little to no maintenance aside from cleaning at your own discretion. SLEEKFENCE doesn’t require you to polish or paint your contemporary black fence. All you’ll need to do is install it and enjoy it for a lifetime. Let’s take a second and talk about how this works. Our aluminum privacy fence panels and screen panels are powder-coated black. Because they are made from aluminum they are resistant to corrosion and don’t rust.
