9 Secrets Most Fencing Companies Won't Tell You

  • Labour is the greatest cost to a fencing company, and companies will do everything they can to minimize that cost. This can mean hiring the cheapest labour they can find, or cutting corners to save labour on a quoted project.

Cheap labour typically translates into low-quality work and high staff turn-over. At Premium Fence… We recognize that our staff are the foundation of our success, and choose to invest in quality people of good character who love what they do, and take pride in their work.

  • Most Fencing companies engage in little or no staff training. Some will even send a new worker to install a fence on their own for the very first time.

Premium Fence has established systems that encompass every facet of our business... from what kind of fasteners we use on a particular fence design, to how we dig a posthole. Our Foremen are tested on their competence in our systems before they ever step on your property. And training and evaluation continues throughout the duration of their employment.

  • Many fence installers, particularly those that charge cheap rates, are not covered by WCB. As a homeowner, you could be held financially responsible if a contractor should injure themselves while building your fence, and can claim against your home insurance policy.

Not only are all Premium Fence employees covered by WCB insurance, we also carry 5 million dollars of liability insurance to protect your property.

  • There are many different grades of material available for every style of fence on the market. Some companies will use a low grade material to cut their costs, without providing samples or alternatives.

At Premium, we will provide you with pricing, brochures, and samples of all the different levels or grades of fencing in the style that you are looking for! (And no, we don’t carry any fence products that aren’t North American Manufactured!)

  • Many people start a fence installation business to make a quick dollar with minimum training and start-up costs.

Established in 1985 and still under original ownership, we have countless satisfied customers throughout the lower mainland. Premium Fence is committed to making a difference in the communities in which we live. We actively put dollars back into our local economy and support a wide range of charitable causes, because we believe that charity is the highest form of giving.

  • Many fence companies will subcontract work to other fence companies when they get busy.

Premium Fence will never send a crew to your home that isn’t a trained, bonded, and insured PREMIUM crew.

  • In the cedar fencing industry…a typical 2 year fence warranty would strictly cover workmanship issues, and not any structural defects as a result of wood (being a natural product) warping and twisting or splitting. Sometimes a 4x4 post will twist so much from the sun that it could jam a gate shut!

The Premium 6 Year Guarantee means that we’ll come back and fix any issues that are affecting your fence structurally, even if they are simply as a result of a natural wood product being affected by the weather!

  • Most fencing contractors won’t provide you with a detailed quotation including the specs of all the materials used in the construction of your fence.

We live by our detailed contracts! Our 4 qualified Project Consultants work together to ensure we are offering the perfect solution for your needs, and our Project Foremen have a detailed jobsheet and site drawing explaining exactly what they are to do in order to fulfill the contract.

  • There are many different fence products on the market today, and very few companies offer all of the solutions available. Most will stick to what they have always offered, and their recommendations and product comparisons are biased- pushing you towards what they will make the most money off of.

We assess your needs thoroughly, and make a recommendation based on exactly what is best for you. In the rare case that we don’t have the right product for your application, we will recommend a few companies you can contact for pricing. Check out our Fence Comparison Chart.

Vinyl Fencing - General Info

Vinyl fencing has become an increasingly popular choice of fencing over the last 30 years. A potentially perfect fit for the client looking for a fence that never needs to be stained. Thankfully, vinyl fencing has evolved from a product with few choices in colour and style, into a product which manufacturers such as Westech Vinyl, Illusions Fence, Kroy/Plygem, USA Vinyl, and Bufftech boast up to 300 different designs combined. Colours, once only limited to white or tan, are now available in many different colour tones (matte or glossy finish) along with several wood grain vinyl fence choices

PVC is a rigid polyvinyl chloride homopolymer compound. A high level of Titanium Dioxide pigment is added to provide long term UV light resistance, as well as impact modifiers for superior strength. The formulation is similar to that of vinyl siding and windows, which have a fifty year history of providing long term durability and structural integrity.

"Virgin Vinyl" refers to 100% new vinyl with UV inhibitors and impact modifiers throughout the entire product. Recycled Vinyl Fence products are not recommended, and have been proven to be too brittle and susceptible to fading. At Premium Fence we only use Virgin Vinyl products.

As with most plastics, PVC becomes less flexible in colder weather conditions. Unless subject to unusual impact it will not break. It is normal for vinyl materials to expand and contract during temperature changes. Our PVC has been engineered to accommodate normal temperature swings.

PVC is fire safe. It has a flashpoint of 900 (approx.) and does not easily ignite. Vinyl is classified as "Self- Extinguishing".

Our PVC products are each tailored to meet or exceed all the requirements necessary for typical product performance, with a chemical compound that includes impact modifiers.

There’s much to recommend for vinyl fencing. It is manufactured in a range of styles, with decorative post caps to match, and there’s now a greater variety of colors and finishes to choose from. Perhaps the most appealing aspect is that you do not need to repaint vinyl. A hard-wearing material, it won’t warp, splinter, rot, split or blister. And it’s easy to clean; dirt can be washed away using only a sponge and hose (or a pressure washer). Though vinyl may initially cost more than wood, it’s less expensive over time.

There are of course negatives to be aware of. Dozens of styles are available, but design options are not unlimited with vinyl fencing, and its plastic appearance is not everyone’s favorite… Although there are many new variations coming to the market continually. Wood grain vinyl and other textured looks are becoming increasingly popular.

The construction of vinyl fencing is more complicated than might be expected. Rails are attached using specialized brackets or crimping tools, and posts must often be reinforced with concrete or metal stiffeners.

Last but not least, it’s important to note that vinyl is generally considered environmentally unfriendly. Toxins are produced in its manufacture, and the material is difficult to recycle. See more Fence Style Comparisons, or Create your own fence quote to see what the costs differences are.

The History of PVC / Vinyl

In 1835 the renowned French chemist Henri Victor Regnault left several flasks of vinyl chloride near an open window, exposing them to sunlight. When he returned some time later he was shocked to discover a white solid polymer inside the flasks. Regnault had discovered PVC. This primitive version of PVC was brittle, essentially a curiosity, and it was many more years before the commercial potential of the product was tapped. A talented B.F. Goodrich scientist named Waldo Semon took up the challenge, and in 1926 he successfully developed a process to plasticize PVC with a unique system of additives.

PVC's applications are legion, but nowhere is its use so visible and striking as it is in the fence and deck industry. A casual survey of any tastefully tended section of suburbia will bear this out. Perhaps the product's greatest asset is its sheer endurance: PVC will still look like new long after wood has begun to age and flecks of rust have appeared on steel. Compare the warranties available for different materials to fully appreciate this feature. Lifetime guarantees are not unheard of for PVC fences and decks-the same cannot be said for wood and metal.

Even better this longevity comes without any extra maintenance. As a matter of fact PVC requires less care than other common materials. Staining can extend the life of a wood deck and a professional repaint can add years onto the life of an iron fence--all PVC needs is an occasional wash with a garden hose and it's back to looking like it did the day it was bought. It's no surprise that PVC products are often billed as "Maintenance-Free".

PVC is easy for your fence and deck company to work with as well. A well-equipped shop is capable of producing PVC fences that match the look of their wood and iron counterparts to a "T". PVC lattice, pickets and finials are all available, and can be combined with a dollop of healthy imagination to create some truly extraordinary and memorable designs.

All of these benefits come without an exorbitant price tag. Today's factories are capable of churning out an impressive selection of profiles at record speeds. Each piece is as similar to its neighbour as two pins in a sewing kit-such is the industry's enviable reputation when it comes to quality control. With the length of the warranties involved, it can't be any other way. Economies of scale work their magic and the prime beneficiary is the consumer. The short story - PVC's pricing is competitive with other fence and deck materials.

Wood and Metal fences are of course still popular--PVC isn't so much replacing them as it is complimenting them in your favourite neighborhood. Never before has there been more choice when buying a fence or deck than there is today: it's a great time to be a homeowner.

We work all through the winter

Installing fences in the fall and winter ensures:

  • Minimal damage to plant and garden growth that would be fresh in the spring and summer.
  • The wood to dry and season slowly, as opposed to summer months where the heat will twist and warp wood as a result of drying out too quick.
  • Timely protection against the wind and snow.
  • Added security for home and family as the nights get darker.

We are now offering substantial price reductions to help keep our crews busy during the coming winter season, and Yes they we are well prepared and ready to work in all weather conditions.
