The story:

We were bidding on a job; the customer wanted us to provide a quote on a solid privacy fence. We provided a full proposal with options for cedar and vinyl, complete with a site map. We outlined the value we could bring to the table with our quality product, client support team, experienced crews, and warranty program. While following up, we learned the client had elected to go with a cheaper contractor. The result is shown below. Please note that this is a “brand new” fence.

Sometimes we receive objections that sound a lot like this:

“Your price is higher than that of another contractor that provided us with a quote.”

“We understand that your competitor’s product may not be as good. However, it will be sufficient for our needs.”

Please don’t fall into these traps; the strata with the above fence will most likely need to get a quote for yet another replacement in 5 years; they will also be paying a hefty maintenance bill every year to keep that fence upright. Our cedar fence would have required no maintenance for at least the first 3-5 years. At that point, just a simple re-stain. A vinyl fence would have been virtually maintenance-free. Had something gone wrong, our warranty team would be on it, and it would have been addressed efficiently and effectively. In attempts to save money upfront, the strata mentioned will pay many thousands of dollars more in the long run; this decision will also cost them and their poor property manager time and energy. Few things are more stressful for strata’s than dealing with a problematic and poorly constructed cedar fence. Please choose a contractor that will do the job right the first time.
