Case Study: 2-Tone Vinyl

Project Overview

The owners of this Pitt Meadows single-family home contacted Premium Fence while they were still deciding which fencing material made the most sense for their yard. They were considering cedar, vinyl, and aluminum, but wanted a better understanding of how each option would compare in terms of cost, maintenance, appearance, and long-term value.

During the initial phone call, our team reviewed the basic differences between the materials and helped explain the pros and cons of each. Once the homeowners had a better idea of their options, we scheduled a site visit so one of our estimators could take a closer look at the property, review the layout, and help them choose a fence style that would work well with the rest of the yard.

The full project included 157 linear feet of fencing, with two gates for the main home and one gate for the neighboring property. One important detail was the existing two-tone cedar fence along the west side of the yard. The homeowners wanted the new back fence to feel connected to that existing style, rather than looking like a completely separate addition.

The Problem

The older cedar fence was starting to show its age, and the homeowners were at the point where patching or small repairs no longer felt like the best long-term solution. They wanted something that would freshen up the yard, feel sturdy, and reduce the amount of ongoing maintenance needed in the future.

The Solution

After reviewing the options during the site visit, the homeowners decided to move forward with NORTHERNLINE® vinyl fencing for the back section of the property. The two-tone design, with white rails and khaki infill, gave them the clean and finished look they wanted while still tying in with the existing two-tone cedar fence already on site.

The colour combination was an important part of the decision. A solid white fence may have looked too different from the rest of the yard, while a darker or more modern material may not have matched the existing fence style as well. The white and khaki vinyl gave the new section enough contrast to look fresh, but still felt soft and natural beside the cedar.

Vinyl was also a strong choice from a maintenance perspective. The homeowners liked the look of wood, but they did not want the same upkeep that can come with cedar over time. While cedar may need staining, sealing, or more regular care, vinyl gives homeowners a cleaner, low-maintenance option. Aluminum was also considered, but it did not provide the same level of privacy or the same visual connection to the existing fence.

The solid vinyl panels helped create a more private backyard while keeping the overall look coordinated. Premium Fence completed the installation over three workdays.

The Result

The finished fence gave the Pitt Meadows property a cleaner, more polished appearance. The new two-tone vinyl section blended well with the existing cedar fence, while giving the homeowners the low-maintenance benefits they were looking for along the back of the property.

The white rails and khaki infill added a subtle contrast without feeling too bold. Compared to a full white vinyl fence, the two-tone design created a softer look that still kept the yard feeling bright, fresh, and open.

The homeowners now have a fence that suits the existing style of their yard, improves privacy, and will be easier to care for in the years ahead. The vinyl portion is backed by a 20-year product warranty, along with Premium Fence’s 10-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ

Why did the homeowners choose vinyl instead of cedar?

The homeowners liked the look of cedar, but they wanted something that would be easier to maintain over time. Vinyl gave them a clean, finished look without the same need for staining, sealing, or regular upkeep.

Can vinyl fencing match an existing wood fence?

Yes, in many cases it can. For this project, the two-tone vinyl fencing worked well because the white rails and khaki infill tied in with the lighter tones of the existing cedar fence. It gave the yard a more coordinated look without needing every section to be the exact same material.

Is two-tone vinyl fencing a good option for backyards?

Two-tone vinyl can be a great option for backyards because it adds a bit more warmth and contrast than a solid white fence. It still feels clean and bright, but the second colour can help soften the overall look.

How long did this fence installation take?

This Pitt Meadows fence project was completed over three workdays. The timeline can change depending on the size of the project, site conditions, weather, gates, access, and whether old fencing needs to be removed.

Is vinyl fencing lower maintenance than cedar?

Yes. Vinyl is generally much lower maintenance than cedar because it does not need to be stained or sealed. It also does not rot, splinter, or attract termites the way wood can over time.

Does vinyl fencing provide good privacy?

Yes. Solid vinyl panels are a strong option for homeowners who want more privacy in their backyard. For this project, vinyl helped create a more enclosed and private space while still keeping the yard bright and clean-looking.

Why not use aluminum fencing for this project?

Aluminum was considered, but it was not the best fit for what the homeowners wanted. They were looking for privacy and a style that would connect with the existing two-tone cedar fence. Solid vinyl panels made more sense for both the look and function of the yard.

Can Premium Fence help compare cedar, vinyl, and aluminum?

Yes. Premium Fence can walk homeowners through the main differences between cedar, vinyl, and aluminum, including appearance, maintenance, cost, privacy, and long-term value. A site visit can also help narrow down which option makes the most sense for the property.

What warranty comes with vinyl fencing?

For this project, the vinyl portion was backed by a 20-year product warranty, along with Premium Fence’s 10-year workmanship warranty. Warranty details may vary depending on the product line and project type.

Is vinyl fencing a good choice for older fence replacements?

Yes. Vinyl can be a good choice when an older wood fence is starting to rot, lean, or require too much maintenance. It gives the yard a refreshed look while reducing the amount of upkeep needed in the future.
